The Illawarra is a narrow strip of land between an escarpment and the ocean, and that geography decides almost everything about putting a pool in here. Steep blocks, sandstone, and side access that runs out fast. It is worth understanding before you take a quote at face value.

Delivery to the Illawarra

Every shell leaves our factory on the NSW mid-north coast, and everything runs through Sydney to reach the Illawarra, so delivery sits a little above a Sydney job on the same shell.

Freight is worked out on your actual address and built into the quoted price, never added at the end. The bigger variable down here is your ground, not the delivery. Tell us your suburb and we will give you the delivered number.

The escarpment, and why Illawarra quotes vary so much

The northern suburbs, Austinmer, Thirroul, Coledale, Stanwell Park, sit on the slope. That gives you two problems at once: a steep fall across the block, and sandstone underneath.

Rock excavation runs roughly $250 to $450 per cubic metre against $45 to $95 for ordinary digging. On a seven metre pool that is the difference between a $3,300 excavation and one comfortably past $10,000. It is the single line that separates a $55,000 job from an $80,000 one, and it is why two houses on the same street can get very different quotes.

You cannot know for certain until you dig, but you can improve the odds. Neighbours who have put in a pool, a basement or a retaining wall will tell you what they found. Illawarra block types

The escarpment suburbs

Austinmer, Thirroul, Coledale, Bulli. Steep, rocky, and narrow. Access is usually the constraint rather than the yard, and these almost always go over the house on a crane. The narrower shells matter here: the Nova, Oasis and Entertainer ranges are 3.0 to 3.5 m wide, which is what gets a pool into a yard a wider shell cannot reach.

The flat coastal suburbs

Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Wollongong proper, Warilla. Flatter, sandier, with proper side access on a lot of blocks. Considerably cheaper to install and where you have real freedom on which shell you choose.

Shellharbour, Kiama and the newer estates

Flinders, Shell Cove, Kiama Downs. Flat, newer, good access and clay ground. The easiest install in the region, and where the bigger shapes make sense because there is room.

Crane access

A seven metre shell is about 400 kg, so reach decides the cost, not weight.

• Side access over about 900 mm clear and a machine can usually walk it down. Cheapest by a distance.
• Under that and it goes over the house. Budget $1,800 to $3,200 for the crane day plus float.
• A steep fall to the rear, which is most of the northern suburbs, means a bigger crane with more reach and a longer setup.
• Powerlines and narrow streets. Endeavour Energy clearance rules can add a permit and a traffic controller.

NSW compliance

Every shell comes engineered and certified for NSW, with the structural engineering and Certificate of Compliance in the pack. You or your builder handle approval (a CDC through a private certifier, or a DA through Wollongong, Shellharbour or Kiama council), a compliant barrier, registration on the NSW Swimming Pool Register within 30 days, and the install.

One local note: parts of the escarpment are in landslip risk zones, and that can require a geotechnical report as a condition of approval. Your certifier will flag it early, and it is the same report worth getting anyway for the rock question.

Heating

Same answer as Sydney. Unheated, roughly December to March. An inverter heat pump and a blanket take that to about eight months, and our Comfort package includes both. It is the upgrade people most often skip and then wish they had not.

What an Illawarra pool costs

A finished job typically lands between $55,000 and $85,000 all in. A flat Shellharbour block with good access sits at the bottom of that. A steep Thirroul block where you hit rock sits at the top, or past it. That spread is real and any quote that ignores it is guessing.

Common questions

Why is my quote so different from my mate’s down the road?

Almost always rock and access. On the escarpment those two lines can swing a job by $20,000 or more between neighbouring streets.

Should I get a geotech report?

On a sloping escarpment block, yes. It costs $1,500 to $4,000 and it is the difference between a quote and a guess. Council may require one anyway in a landslip zone.

Is it much dearer than Sydney?

A little more on freight, because everything runs through Sydney to get here. The bigger variable is your ground, not the delivery.

Can my own builder install it?

Yes. We supply the shell, equipment and engineering, your builder does the rest.
