Sydney is our home patch. We are not a national call centre quoting your postcode off a map, we are a local supplier who has put pools into these suburbs and knows what a Sydney block does to a quote. That matters more here than almost anywhere, because Sydney has sandstone, steep sites, tight lane access and councils that all want slightly different things.

Delivery across Sydney

Every shell leaves our factory on the NSW mid-north coast. Freight is worked out on your actual address and built into the price we quote, never added at the end.

Sydney is close enough that delivery barely moves whether you are in Manly or Camden, which is why we quote the same way across the whole city. Tell us your suburb and we will give you the delivered price.

Sandstone, and why Sydney quotes blow out

This is the single biggest reason a Sydney pool costs more than the same pool somewhere flat. Large parts of Sydney sit on sandstone, and if you hit it at 1.2 metres the excavation stops being a machine job and starts being a rock job.

Rock excavation runs roughly $250 to $450 per cubic metre against $45 to $95 for ordinary digging. On a seven metre pool that is the difference between a $3,300 excavation and one well past $10,000. It is the line that turns a $49,000 quote into a $60,000 one.

You cannot know for certain until you dig, but you can improve the odds. Neighbours who have put in a pool or a basement will tell you what they found. A geotechnical report costs $1,500 to $4,000 and is money well spent on a sloping sandstone block. Our cost guide has the full rate breakdown with sources.

The Sydney block types

Northern beaches and harbour

Avalon, Newport, Mosman, Balgowlah. Steep fall to the rear, sandstone underneath, and often under a metre of side access between the house and the boundary. These almost always go over the house on a crane. The narrow shells matter here: the Nova, Oasis and Entertainer ranges are 3.0 to 3.5 metres wide, which is what gets a pool into a yard a wider shell cannot reach.

Inner west and eastern suburbs

Marrickville, Randwick, Bondi. Small rear yards, terrace and semi frontages, and street access that is genuinely difficult on a truck. The constraint is usually the crane setup and traffic management rather than the pool itself. A plunge pool or a small shell often suits these blocks better than trying to force a seven metre pool into a courtyard.

Western and south-western Sydney

Penrith, Camden, Oran Park, Leppington. Flat, newer estates, proper side access, and clay rather than sandstone. This is the easiest and cheapest install in Sydney, and where the bigger shapes make sense because there is room for them.

Crane access, and how to check yours

A seven metre fibreglass shell is about 400 kilograms, so weight is rarely the issue. Reach is. What decides the cost:

• Side access over about 900 mm clear and a machine can usually walk it down. Cheapest option by a distance.
• Under that, or a fence and a neighbour’s eave in the way, and it goes over the house. Budget $1,800 to $3,200 for the crane day plus float.
• Steep fall to the rear, which is most of the northern beaches, means a bigger crane with more reach and a longer setup.
• Powerlines over the street. Ausgrid clearance requirements turn a straightforward lift into a traffic management job, and on some streets that means a permit and a traffic controller.

NSW compliance, and what we hand you

Every shell we supply comes engineered and certified for NSW conditions, with the structural engineering and the Certificate of Compliance in the pack.

What you or your builder still handle:

• Approval, either a Complying Development Certificate through a private certifier or a DA through council
• A compliant barrier, and the final certificate of compliance for the fence
• Registering the pool on the NSW Swimming Pool Register, which is required within 30 days
• The install itself, being excavation, crane, plumbing, electrical and backfill

Registration and a valid certificate of compliance are required before you can sell or lease the property, so it is not a step to leave until later.

Heating changes a Sydney pool

Worth being straight about, because it changes what the pool is worth to you. An unheated Sydney pool is comfortable roughly from December to March. That is a four month pool.

An inverter heat pump takes that to about eight months, and a pool blanket cuts the running cost substantially because most heat loss is off the surface overnight. Together they are the difference between a pool you use and a pool you look at.

Short version for a straightforward seven metre pool with reasonable access and no rock: expect $30,000 to $60,000 for the works, on top of the shell and equipment. Sandstone, a crane over the house or stone coping push it to the top of that range and beyond. We price the shell for your actual address rather than quoting a range.

Common questions about pools in Sydney

Do you install, or only supply?

Both. Supply only and DIY suit Sydney buyers who already have trades, which is where the saving is. If you would rather it was handled, ask and we will talk through what that looks like on your block.

How long does a Sydney pool take?

Once approval is through, a straightforward install is usually two to four weeks of actual work. Approval itself is the long pole, anywhere from a few weeks for a CDC to a few months for a DA.

Will it fit down my side?

Send us a photo of the side access and the rear yard and we will tell you honestly, including whether you need a crane. It costs nothing and it is the question that decides the budget.

What if we hit rock?

Your excavator prices it on the actual volume, because nobody can quote it blind. On a sandstone block get a geotechnical report before you sign anything.

Do I have to register the pool?

Yes. NSW requires registration on the Swimming Pool Register within 30 days, and a valid certificate of compliance before you sell or lease.
